Ex-LHS coach

undergoes surgery

Former Lawrence High football coach Bill Freeman, now retired and living in LeRoy, underwent prostate surgery on Sept. 15 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

"I'm getting along a lot better," Freeman reported on Monday. "Fortunately, they found no cancer in the lymph nodes."

Freeman, 68, underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery in October of 1995. Freeman coached at LHS for 16 years, retiring after the 1989 season with a record of 134-38 and five Class 6A state championships.

Tennis washed

Free State High's girls tennis home dual against Olathe South was postponed Monday. It has been rescheduled for next Monday at the FSHS courts.

FSHS hires assistants

Free State High announced the hiring of two assistant coaches Monday. Anthony Brixious, a Kansas University student, will coach wrestling -- which still has an assistant position to fill. Former Nickerson High School coach Dari Ashworth, who teaches at West and Central junior highs, will replace softball assistant Shelly Byrn.
