The Kansas River claimed its first victim here in almost two years -- a 10-year-old local boy, Anthony Mendoza, who couldn't swim. He apparently had gone wading alone in an outlet area near the river and had been swept into the current.
More than 8,000 students were expected for the annual fee-paying derby at Kansas University.
