Emporia -- Lawrence High senior Brooke Seymour placed second at No. 1 singles Saturday to lead the Lion entries at the Emporia girls tennis tournament.

Seymour dropped just one game in her first two matches. She fell to Manhattan's Maria Rosenberg, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.

"The final between Rosenberg and Brooke showed what tennis can be like when two athletes who know how to play come up against each other," LHS coach Dick Wedel said. "It was a battle. Brooke squeezed more unforced errors into that match than I have seen all season. But there was constant pressure. She had to hit perfect placements to win a point."

In No. 2 singles, Lawrence's Sarah Collins went 2-1 to place third.

"She's just a sophomore and has really made the most of her last couple of chances in varsity meets," Wedel said of Collins.

Lawrence's No. 1 doubles team of Lisa Dixon and Katherine Wells went 1-2 and placed fourth. Lawrence's No. 2 doubles team of Lori Lemesany and Erin Morgan went 1-2 and placed seventh.
