Acquisition of a $4.1 million warehouse/office complex for the Lawrence school district will be on the school board's agenda Monday night.

The Lawrence school board meets Monday night to vote on a contract to buy a $4.1 million warehouse and office building as well as to select a name for the district's new elementary school.

The district has an agreement to buy the property at 110 McDonald Dr. and has paid $200,000 in earnest money, said Jim Freeman, executive director of business.

The goal is to centralize warehouse operations and relocate central administration staff there from the service center on Clinton Parkway.

Freeman said a series of contracts for construction of the $6.7 million elementary school on West 15th Street would be up for a vote. The school is expected to cost $300,000 more than projected when district voters adopted a $16.6 million bond issue in 1998.

The board's public meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the district service center, 3705 Clinton Pkwy.

The board also is scheduled to:

  • Delve into the first phase of a new strategic plan for the district that includes hiring additional central office administrators.
  • Review progress on developing a program under which board members would serve as liaisons to specific schools to improve communication.
  • Receive a report about efforts to more accurately report the academic accomplishments of Lawrence high school graduates to prospective colleges.

Another issue that could be discussed is a proposal to move May 2000 graduation ceremonies for Free State High School and Lawrence High School students from the Lied Center to Memorial Stadium.

Since Allen Fieldhouse, with unlimited seating for guests, wasn't to be available next year to the school district, a committee selected the Lied Center, knowing each graduate would be limited to four or five tickets for guests.
