It's not surprising that fire trucks are irresistible to kids. Their bright colors, loud sirens and high speeds are a thrilling combination.
This fire truck pedal car project is one way to add a spark of excitement to a child's holiday this year. Designed with 4- to 7-year-olds in mind, the project incorporates a working steering mechanism coupled with pedal power, all topped off with an exciting fire-engine red paint job.
Required materials include two sheets of plywood, a few pieces of pine or similar lumber, two steel rods and two pieces of flat steel stock, six wheels, screws, nails and glue, a small assortment of common hardware and some paint.
Although the project requires careful measuring and a little metal work, the fire truck is simple enough for most woodworkers. First, trace the pieces onto wood, cut out and assemble with glue and nails. Next, paint and install the decorative ladders. Finally, install the steering and pedal mechanisms and attach the wheels. A simple modification eliminates the drive mechanism and creates a foot-powered vehicle. The completed truck measures 48 inches long by 24 inches wide.
The Fire Truck Pedal Car plan, No. 899, is $8.95 and includes step-by-step directions with photos, full-size traceable patterns and a shopping list and cutting schedule. A package of pedal car plans, No. C143, is $19.95 and includes this plan plus plans for a dump truck and a police car. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $3.95. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow three to four weeks for delivery (for rush delivery, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum and allow about seven to 10 days).
