On Sept. 26, 1899, the Lawrence World commented: "The question of a new court house is now before the people. The commissioners have submitted the proposition and it will be voted on at the November election...The new building will cost $80,000 and the money will be raised by a direct levy for the purpose. This vote is submitted under a special act passed by the legislature last winter for this county. It is for the people to say what they want."
