KU soccer team

rolls in opener

The Kansas University women's soccer team defeated Drury College 3-0 Friday on the first day of the KU Credit Union Jayhawk Invitational at SuperTarget Field.

The Jayhawks (4-4) outshot the Panthers 27-6. Drury fell to 4-4.

Transfer Hilla Rantala scored her first goal as a Jayhawk in the game's ninth minute. Rantala, who was the 1997 Big South Co-Conference Player of the year in 1997 at South Alabama, suffered an ankle injury in the season opener.

Meghann Haven made the assist on Rantala's goal, and the junior midfielder assisted forward Lindsey Horner on another goal in the 25th minute. Haven's fifth assist of the year set a KU single-season record.

Natalie Hoogveld scored the final goal with an assist from Johanna Larsson in the 75th minute.

Kansas goalie Betsy Pollard made four saves in the shutout.

KU faces Creighton in the invitational's final game on Sunday.

Jayhawk softball team

sweeps Butler County

Sarah Clopton and Melanie DeWinter pitched shutouts as Kansas swept Butler County, 3-0 and 1-0, in college softball Friday at Jayhawk Field.

Clopton threw a three-hitter in the opener, and DeWinter tossed a two-hitter in the second game.

"Buter represented themselves well," KU coach Tracy Bunge said. "It's nice to see another team on the field instead of scrimmaging against ourselves. We get to see some new faces and that helps us put some things together."

Christy McPhail tripled home two runs in the first game. KU's run in the second game came when Shelley Musser singled, stoled second and scored on a single by Leah Tabb.

The Jayhawks will entertain Johnson County at 11 a.m. and Central Missouri State at 1 p.m. today.

KU women's tennis team

start strong at Indiana

Bloomington, Ind. -- The Kansas University women's tennis team opened its fall season Friday with a successful day in the Indiana University Fall Invitational. The Jayhawks won five of their seven singles matches and four of five doubles matches.

Singles players Julia Sidorova, Monica Sekulov, Cheryl Mallaiah, Christi Wagenaar and Tiffany Chang advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights with first-round victories.

Sidorova and Brooke Chiller and Lisa Mallaiah and Sekulov won their flights in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, and will play in today's semifinals.

KU men's tennis team

has mixed results

Kansas University's run in the T. Rowe Price Clay Court Championships came to an end Friday in Baltimore, Md. The doubles team of Ed Dus and Rodrigo Echagaray lost to Clemson's Josh Goffi and Darrin Knight 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.

Meanwhile, several Jayhawks were in action at the Middle Tennessee Fall Classic in Munfreesboro, Tenn.

Sophomore Alex Barragan defeated Paul Shoulin of Alabama-Birmigham in the second round of the flight one tournament and will face teammate Quentin Blakeney, who defeated Rene-Charles Combette of Mississippi State and Bill McGugen of Vanderbilt.

In flight two, senior Bryan Maier also won two matches and will play Santiago Sahagun of Murray State today.

In flight three, freshman Sebastian Libertino defeated Clete Browder of Troy State 6-3, 6-0 in the second round and will play Rob Mages of Tennessee-Chattanooga today. Pete Stroer also won in round two, defeating Hussain Dashti of Western Kentucky, and will play Chris McDonald of Mississippi State today.

Kansas women struggle

in golf tournament

Albuquerque, N.M. -- The Kansas University women's golf team struggled Friday, shooting a 325 in the 18-hole second round of the Jones Intercable/Dick McGuire Invitational at the par-73 University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

The Jayhawks shot 319 in the first round Thursday and are in 17th place with a two-day total of 644 -- 58 strokes behind leader Arizona.

Junior Sarah Mahoney leads KU with a two-day total of 157 after carding a 78 Friday. She is tied for 48th place.

Texas' Kristin Dufour, Texas Christian's Angela Stanford and Arizona's Jenna Daniels are tied for the lead at 143. The three-day tournament concludes today.

Lions' junior varsity

stops SM South

Lawrence High defeated Shawnee Mission South, 10-7, in junior varsity football Friday at LHS.

Joe Bell scored on a 25-yard run for the Lions. LHS scored twice on safeties -- Jay Wiesner tackled a player in the end zone, and a snap on a punt by SM South sailed through the end zone.

Bell and Brandon Massey intercepted passes for Lawrence.

The Lions improved to 1-2.

Seabury wins opener

Seabury Academy's freshman volleyball team defeated Mission Oaks 15-6, 15-9, 10-15, 15-12 in the team's season opener Friday at Seabury. Emily Hierl served six aces and recorded five kills in the match.

Veritas victorious

Veritas Christian School defeated Whitefield, 15-9, 6-15, 15-4, in junior high volleyball Friday at East Lawrence Center. Amanda Mayhew served 10 straight points in the final game. Veritas improved to 5-2.

Holcom meeting

Holcom Amateur Baseball Association will conduct a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Holcom Rec Center, 27th and Iowa streets. Officers will be elected.
