* Kansas will travel to San Diego State in four years (2003) for the return game of the home-and-home series. . . .

  • All seven officials were assigned by the Mountain West Conference. . . .
  • Kickoff temperature was 78 degrees with the wind out of the south at 13 mph and gusting to 28 mph. . . .
  • HenrÃ- Childs was a surprise starter at tailback for the Jayhawks. Regular tailback David Winbush sprained an ankle at Colorado last week, but was expected to start. Winbush made his first appearance on the Jayhawks' second series. Childs suffered a concussion in the third quarter and didn't return. . . .
  • San Diego State dominated the first quarter, running 24 plays to the Jayhawks' eight. The Aztecs produced two 80-yard drives of 13 and 11 plays each. . . .
  • San Diego State's Nate Tandberg kicked a 22-yard field goal with no time on the clock just before intermission. The Aztecs' Derrick Lewis caught a 49-yard pass from Jack Hawley at the Kansas nine as time expired, but KU's Dion Rayford was called for roughing the passer and, since the half can't end on a defensive penalty, Aztecs' coach Ted Tollner opted for the field goal attempt with the bonus down. . . .
  • San Diego State had 413 yards of offense in the first half. Kansas had 23 (27 yards passing and minus-four rushing). In the first half, SDSU quarterback Jack Hawley completed 16 of 19 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns. . . .
  • Kansas dodged a bullet early in the third quarter when SDSU strong safety Rico Curtis intercepted a Zac Wegner pass and returned the ball 15 yards to the KU 22. Fortunately for the Jayhawks, Curtis fumbled and KU tackle Justin Hartwig recovered. . . .
  • SDSU place-kicker Nate Tandberg was far short on a 52-yard field goal attempt midway through the third quarter. . . .
  • San Diego State defensive tackle George Heather was ejected early in the fourth quarter. The incident occurred during the Jayhawks' second touchdown drive. . . .
  • Former Kansas offensive lineman Hessley Hempstead was in the press box scouting for the Detroit Lions. Hempstead retired as a player with the Lions after last season because of a knee injury. . . .
  • Linebacker Andrew LeClair led the Jayhawks in tackles with 12. No other KU players were in double figures. . . .
  • Kansas finished with zero rushing yards, mainly because KU quarterback Dylen Smith was docked for 56 negative yards on five sacks. SDSU had seven sacks in all, including three by Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila who became the Aztecs' all-time sack leader with 27. . . .
  • KU's Harrison Hill had a career best day with five catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. . . .
