Topeka -- Free State High went 5-1 Saturday, losing to Santa Fe Trail in the final of the Topeka Seaman volleyball tournament.
"Santa Fe Trail is tough," FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said. "We played really well today. We're pleased with it."
SFT (third at the Class 4A state tournament last year) outlasted Free State (fourth in the Class 6A tournament), 15-17, 15-11, 15-9 in the final.
The Firebirds, now 16-5, defeated Topeka West, 15-5, 12-15, 15-9, in the quarterfinals and Topeka Seaman, 15-3, 6-15, 15-6, in the semifinals to reach the championship.
Free State's middle blocker Joyia Chadwick and setter Alison Lungstrum were named to the all-tournament team. Chadwick finished with 40 kills and 47 blocks. Lungstrum had 120 assists.
Chadwick and Sarah Graves dominated defensively in the middle. Graves had 53 blocks.
Next for Free State is its home opener on Thursday. The Firebirds will play host to Lawrence, Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission North at 6 p.m.
