Junction City -- Free State High's boys soccer team -- which had only won three games total coming into the season -- now has won two of its last three.
The Firebirds crushed Junction City, 10-0, on Saturday, sandwiching wins around Thursday's 3-2 overtime loss to Lawrence High this week. Free State knocked off Shawnee Mission West, 3-1, on Tuesday.
"I wasn't real pleased with our intensity in the first half," said FSHS coach Jason Pendleton, whose squad only led 3-0 at the intermission. "They lacked the intensity we had for Shawnee Mission West and Lawrence High. I let them know I was not pleased at halftime and they responded."
Colin Baumchen (two goals), Pat Watkins (two goals), Kevin Steffen, Paul Epp, Jake Forbes, Mike McQueeney, Ryan Hornberger and Brandon Sublette all scored for the Firebirds -- who improved to 2-9, tying last year's team for most wins in a season.
Todd Wilkins had three assists, Nick Ens had three and Steffen and Watkins had one apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Danny Lenz and junior Andy Thornton combined for the shutout. Free State out-shot Junction City, 33-7.
Free State's next game is Oct. 5 at home against SM East.
"I'm going to golf on Monday and they get a day off," Pendleton quipped. "We're going to work to get our conditioning up to speed. We want to be in the best shape of our lives. We'll work on refining some things and have to work on certain aspects of our game."
The junior varsity squad also won 10-0 to improve to 2-5-1.
