Dr. Neal Lintecum, of Lawrence Orthopaedic Surgery, recently received certification in orthopedic surgery from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Lintecum, who is on staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, also has fellowship training in hand and upper-extremity surgery.

In addition to these promotions, newly appointed ISO team leaders are Cory Backes, Brian Gigous, Pam Davidson, Wes Beal, Brenna Muntzert and Mike Wallace.

  • A reorganization of the executive staff for the Kansas Department of Human Resources meant a promotion for William Sanders, a Lawrence native and Kansas University graduate. Sanders is the new chief information officer and director of staff services, and reports directly to the office of Richard Beyer, the state's secretary of human resources.

  • The Small Business Development Center at Johnson County Community College has a new regional director, Cheri Streeter. Each year, the center provides counseling and training services for 350 small businesses in Johnson, Miami and Wyandotte counties.

  • Westaff recently added two employment coordinators -- Brandi Dodds and Teri Vickers -- to its Lawrence office. The 51-year-old employment agency, with more than 425 offices around the world, is celebrating its first anniversary in Lawrence. An open house is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at Westaff's office in the Hillcrest Shopping Center, 925 Iowa.

  • Stevens & Brand announced two additions to its staff. Sally A. Howard, an associate, is a 1993 graduate of the Kansas University Law School and practiced previously with Holbrook, Heaven & Osborn in Kansas City, Kan., and the Johnson County Public Defender's Office. She will focus on domestic and family law, criminal defense and general litigation. Bradley R. Finkeldei, an associate, graduated this year from KU's law school with highest distinction. He will focus on health care and educational and municipal law, along with litigation practice.

  • Kirk J. Hardinger and Richard A. Lorenzo, who received law degrees this year from Kansas University, have been hired as associates to work in the business law section of Morrison & Hecker, a law firm based in Kansas City, Mo. Both men also received master of business degrees this year from KU. Lorenzo lives in Lawrence.

  • Julie Thornton is the new national sales manager for SysAdmin magazine at Miller Freeman Inc. in Lawrence. She has worked for the company for five years, and formerly was senior account manager for the magazine.

  • The Security Benefit Group of Companies announced that Kris A. Robbins, president and chief operating officer, was elected to the company's board of directors during its September board meeting. She joined Topeka-based Security Benefit in 1997.

Honors and awards

KANU-FM has been named the noncommercial radio station of the year by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters, based on points accumulated for winning awards in several categories, with consideration given to the number of categories entered. The station received the following awards in the noncommercial radio category: first place, public affairs program, "State of the Statehouse," Nick Haines; first place, single-topic event news coverage, "Haysville Tornado," Russell Lewis; second place, single-topic event news coverage, "KU Abortion Protest," Nick Haines; first place, editorial/commentary, "The Citizens of Here, Kansas," Tom Averill; second place, editorial/commentary, "I Miss Russia," Roger Martin; second place, complete newscast, "KANU News," J. Schafer; honorable mention, complete news feature, "Civil War Exhibit," Nick Haines; honorable mention, station promotion announcement, "Imagination Workshop No. 2," Darrell Brogdon. The awards will be presented during the association's convention Oct. 6 in Manhattan.

  • Two local radio stations won awards in the annual awards competition sponsored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. In the medium market radio classification, KLZR-FM won two awards: first place, humorous commercial, "Bone Appetit -- Rediscover the Magic," Jason Marck; and first place, station promotion announcement, "XMAS Giveaway," Jason Marck. In the same classification, KLWN-AM also won two awards: first place, complete newscast, "KLWN Morning News Watch," Melissa Gandall and Scott Parks; and honorable mention, single-topic event news coverage, "Lawrence Athletic Club Fire," Melissa Gandall, Cody Howard and Scott Parks. The awards will be presented during the association's convention Oct. 6 in Manhattan.

  • Deborah McMullen, a Realtor for Coldwell Banker McGrew Real Estate, was recognized as a member of the 1999 Kansas Association of Realtors Honor Society during the association's annual meeting this month in Wichita. She was among the 124 Realtors chosen for the award, out of the 6,800 Realtors in Kansas. The award recognizes professional achievement through education and the volunteering of expertise for use by association leaders.

  • Griffin Technologies LLC has been named to Deloitte & Touche's Fast 50 Program for the Kansas/Western Missouri region, a ranking of the 50 fastest-growing technology companies in the area. The rankings are based on percentage growth in revenues during the five years through 1998. Griffin Technologies, a Lawrence software development company, ranked 25th by increasing its revenues by 157 percent during the period. Its president is Bennett Griffin.

A free Homebuyer Workshop will be conducted by Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. (HCCI) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 14 in room 204 of the Petro-Allied Health Center at Washburn University in Topeka. Participants will learn how to budget, shop and negotiate for a house. Also covered: what lenders look for in a credit report and job history.   • The Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center (MAMTC) will present a seminar, "Fundamentals of ISO 9000 Implementation," from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at MAMTC's Kansas City office, 1575 N. Universal Ave., Suite 130, Lakeside Plaza I. Curt Lopez, senior project director at MAMTC, will teach the seminar. Another seminar, "How to Better Manage and Control the Shop Floor," will be conducted at the same times and location Oct. 14, taught by an MAMTC engineer.   • With fewer than 100 days until Jan. 1, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is encouraging all small businesses to ensure that their computer systems are "Y2K compliant," the common description for computers that won't crash because of the "Millennium Bug." The SBA maintains that as many as 30 percent of small businesses nationwide have yet to upgrade their computers to ensure that they will be able to read the change of year as "2000" instead of "1900." It advises: Check computers, take prompt action and stay informed about potential problems and available solutions. SBA also offers loans for companies looking to make upgrades.   • An Employment Tax Workshop will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 13 at Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, Mo.   • The U.S. Small Business Administration is seeking nominations for its annual Small Business Awards, to be presented during National Small Business Week 2000. The awards are given each year to outstanding entrepreneurs and dedicated advocates who have used their professional skills and talents to increase opportunities for small businesses in Kansas and Missouri. Entrepreneur categories: Small Business Person of the Year, Young Entrepreneur, Small Business Exporter, Entrepreneurial Success and Welfare-to-Work.   • The deadline for entries for the Governor's New Product Award, sponsored by the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, is Nov. 3. Judging criteria: economic contribution to Kansas; ingenuity using engineering principles and materials; improved function, ease and savings in use; and percentage of research and development done in Kansas.
