To the editor:
On the weekend of Sept. 18 and 19, Friends of the Kaw held their "Fifth Annual Kaw River Float," breaking all previous records for number of canoes and participants for the weekend. We put 90 canoes on the river on Saturday, and, despite the rainy start, put 60 canoes in on Sunday with more than 300 participants total for the weekend! Each day we had a dozen "safety guides" spread out in canoes and kayaks and a jon boat with an emergency medical technician aboard to help with any problems which might have developed (I'm glad to say, none did).
As in previous years, we had several guest speakers, did lots of fossil-hunting, saw a lot of different bird species, had a wonderful time with our families and were able to educate everyone about the value of our river and the dangers of pollution and industrialization threatening its environs.
It's discouraging that despite the tremendous community involvement, despite a Journal-World telephone interview with our president, and despite repeated assurances from the Journal-World to send a reporter down the river with us to do an update on our organization, we got no coverage in our local paper. Interested members of the public should read the excellent articles in both the Topeka Capitol Journal and Kansas City Star for further information.
Patty Boyer,
Lawrence.
