The student-run radio station at Kansas University has caught the eye -- and ear -- of writers at Rolling Stone magazine.
In the Oct. 14 issue that hit the racks Friday in Lawrence, KJHK-FM 90.7 is one of six college radio stations nationwide picked for the magazine's "college radio stations that rock the Web" list.
The article written by Jenny Eliscu states:
"Back in 1994, when a college station was lucky if it had a computer in its studio, KJHK became the first to broadcast a twenty-four-hour signal live over the Internet. (Though that claim is hotly contested by the University of North Carolina's WXYC.) Nestled in a prime-time Friday after-work time slot (6-8 p.m.) is the local-music show 'Plow the Fields': DJs Chris Eckert and Nick Spacek play hometown heroes like Paw and give exposure to indie and unsigned acts from Lawrence and the surrounding area. And because of the station's Netcast, some Wichita townie's band can be heard by insomniacs in, say, Madagascar."
Patrick Giroux, music director at the radio station, said Rolling Stone had contacted the station before the issue's publication and asked about "Plow the Fields," but he was unclear about the story being about the Internet.
So what effect does Giroux think the nod from Rolling Stone will have on the station, which is run by about 80 student volunteers?
"I think some more listeners and more attention to us through the Internet," he said.
Giroux said he didn't know how many people listen to the station now.
"We haven't done any $50,000 polls," he said.
The other radio stations getting a thumbs-up from Rolling Stone are WCBN-FM 88.3, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor; WJCU-FM 88.7, John Carroll University, Cleveland; WRAS-FM 88.5, Georgia State University, Atlanta; WUSB-FM 90.1, SUNY-Stony Brook, Stony Brook, N.Y.; and WSOU-FM 89.5, Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.
