Free State football update

Two years ago Olathe East defeated Free State High in sophomore football, 35-6.

Now the Firebirds' seniors have turned the tables on the Falcons -- in fact, leading by the exact same score Friday night until a late fumble return for a touchdown -- as Free State defeated Olathe East, 35-14, at Haskell Stadium.

"We were very proud of the fact that we could get that accomplished," FSHS coach Bob Lisher said of the turnaround. "And I know our seniors are proud of that fact, too."

At least one senior echoed Lisher's sentiments, cornerback Bo Blevins -- who set a new team record for interceptions in a season with his third theft.

"It's great," Blevins said. "We had a goal to come out hot to begin with instead of getting our backs against the wall and trying to comeback on somebody. We pretty much seemed to do that. We came out at halftime leading the game just like we wanted to."

Free State bolted to a 28-6 lead at the half, thanks to senior fullback Jake Lawrence, who amassed 183 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries in only two quarters.

In fact, the Firebirds (3-1 overall, 2-1 Sunflower League) only ran 12 plays compared to the Falcons (1-3, 1-2), who had 43 plays.

"The pleasing part was we were able to capitalize on mistakes that Olathe East made and capitalize in a hurry," Lisher said. "Offensively, we came out aggressively and put some points on the board quickly. Defensively, we made some things happen, limiting Olathe East to one big play.

"We came out in a better frame of mind this week and that was the pleasing aspect of what we did Friday night."

Free State also continued a trend that could be disturbing to future opponents -- points off of turnovers. In four games, the Firebirds have scored 28 points following four of the 10 turnovers the team has forced.

"Every time we get a turnover we want to make sure our offense puts some points on the board. We do emphasize those things," Lisher said. "And we also emphasize the other way around -- if our offense falters and turns it over then our defense has to step up and hold those guys three-and-out."

Homecoming: The Firebirds will have a bonfire at 8 p.m. Wednesday and a parade starting at 2:30 p.m. Friday as part of this week's homecoming festivities. Free State plays host to Shawnee Mission East at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Injuries: Lisher updated the status of some hobbling players Monday. They are:

  • David Herrera (hyperextended big toe) probably is out for a week or two.
  • Shaun Flynn (second-degree concussion) will return to practice later this week, but his status for Friday night's game is unknown.
  • Jeremiah Feurt (ankle) is improving and might start this week.
  • Tay Ogunnowo (shin contusion) is day-to-day.
  • Lisher also said the team would "play it safe" with Chris Wheatley (groin) and that he should be fine.
