Expect a Miracle

By Scott Thurman

I buckled my seat belt and reached for a magazine. This was going to be a long plane ride. I glanced at the man next to me. He caught my eye, and said, "Hi, I'm Johnny." I introduced myself. Over the next few hours, we talked about our families and our careers. We had just finished lunch when he launched into an incredible story about a little girl named Megan Marie Harris.

When Megan was 7, she sat on Santa's lap and told him she wanted a baby brother for Christmas. Santa replied, "If you will only believe and have faith, you will have your Christmas wish!" On the way home in the car, Megan shared: "Mommy, Santa's going to bring me a baby brother for Christmas." Her mom was at a loss for words. She had been told she could never have children again.

Over the coming weeks, she faithfully mailed Megan's letters to the North Pole, all the while knowing the futility of her daughter's request. Christmas soon passed, and no baby brother came. But Megan still kept hoping.

Mrs. Harris hated to disappoint her little girl. Megan had already been through so much. She had been diagnosed with leukemia, and as the months wore on, her condition grew worse. Finally, Megan took her last breath on a rainy March day.

A few months passed, and Mrs. Harris began feeling ill. Fearing the worst, she went to her doctor. After a series of tests, the doctors were bewildered, and they asked her to return with her husband in the morning.

The next day, they sat in the doctor's office. "Um, we don't know how to explain this, but you're pregnant. You're going to have a Christmas baby!" Megan's parents were astounded, and they praised God for his miracle. True to the doctor's word, a baby boy was born two days after Christmas. They called the baby Johnny.

Johnny grinned, "And here I am!"
