DORA L. AND FRED CHARLES SANDERS

Ottawa -- Services for Dora L., 88, and Fred Charles "Fritz" Sanders, 89, both of Ottawa, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Burial will be in Washington Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanders died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at her home. Mr. Sanders died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa.

Mrs. Sanders was born June 21, 1911, near Richland, the daughter of Louis Hiram and Hannah Maude (Allen) Griffith. Mr. Sanders was born Nov. 1, 1909, near Lone Star, the son of Charles Bruno and Nellie Magdalena (Wolff) Sanders. The couple moved to Ottawa in 1975 from Lawrence.

Mrs. Sanders was a waitress and grocery store clerk during the 1940s and '50s. In the early 1940s, Mr. Sanders was a milk truck driver for Franklin Creamery, Tonganoxie, and he joined the Lawrence Fire Department Dec. 1, 1941. He was promoted to chief of the department in 1960 and retired in 1974.

The couple were members of the First United Methodist Church, Ottawa, and the Heart of America Edsel Owner's Club, and Mr. Sanders was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

They married Jan. 2, 1932.

Survivors include a son, Billy, Topeka; Mrs. Sanders' sister, Irene Moeller, Overbrook; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa Stained Glass Window Fund or the American Diabetes Assn., and they may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
