State Champion: Titel Nedelcia, coach of the Lawrence Table Tennis Association, went undefeated to win the state tournament on Sept. 11 in Wichita. Nedelcia defeated Yufei Xiao of Lenexa, the highest ranked player in Kansas, 21-6.

Sand Rat Run: Lawrence Sand Rats are sponsoring the ninth annual Mike Ott Memorial Sand Rat Run on Oct. 3 along the Kansas River. There is no registration fee. For information, call Steve Riley at 842-4351 or Greg Burger at 865-2508.

  • Basketball Tourneys: Sport 2 Sport is accepting registrations for two basketball tournaments -- a boys-girls fourth through eighth grade three-game meet on Nov. 13-14 and a boys-girls fourth through 12th grade three-on-three tourney on Oct. 23. For information call 843-4263.

  • LTTA Tourney: Lawrence Table Tennis Association will play host to a tourney limited to city players at 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Competition will be at three levels from beginner to advanced.

  • Cross, Huckfeldt Low: Steve Cross and Ron Huckfeldt fired 78s to share low gross at last Sunday's Jayhawk Golf Club tourney at Alvamar. John Shaffer and Tom Taylor both carded 79s and Ben Overman had an 80. In net, Bob Cohen led with a 71, followed by Taylor's 72, a 72 by Joe Calandrino and Cross's 73.

  • Riley Establishes Record: Steve Riley of Lawrence finished sixth overall and first in the ages 45-49 division of the Wichita Half-Marathon last Sunday. Riley's time of 1:17:16 was a state age group record.

  • Kaw Valley U-10 Splits: Kaw Valley U-10 boys soccer divided weekend games. On Sunday, they beat KC Spirit, 3-1, as Gyer Vierthaler, Greg Glatz and Taylor Bussinger scored and Skylar Buttermore had three saves in goal. On Saturday, they bowed 5-3 to Shawnee Elite. Glatz and Justin Ziegler scored the goals.

  • City Runner Wins: Carol McFall of Lawrence was the overall women's champion in the Pony Express Half-Marathon last Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo. McFall was timed in 1:25:58.

  • Heitzman Takes Two: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 65-69 division of the Tom Mix 5K last Saturday in Dewey, Okla. His time was 19:52. Then on Sunday, Heitzman won the Tulsa Race for the Cure 5K in his age group. He was clocked in 19:42 in that race.

  • Basketball Deadlines: Registration deadline is next Wednesday for the city's Youth Basketball League for kindergarten through sixth graders. The deadline is also Wednesday for the boys fourth through seventh grade Extra Mile Foundation AAU program.

  • LABA Seeks Coaches: Lawrence Amateur Baseball Association is taking applications for volunteer coaching positions in its summer program for youths ages 15-18. Deadline for applications is Nov. 1. LABA fall tryouts are scheduled Oct. 9-10 at Ice Field. For information, call Kent Earl at 842-6915.

  • Rhodes Helps Rockhurst: Rockhurst College of Kansas City, Mo., was ranked No. 1 academically among NCAA Div. II women's basketball teams last season. Among the team members was Lawrence's Laura Rhodes who compiled a 3.8 grade point average as a freshman.
