A Lawrence woman decided to fake a car theft to escape charges for driving without a license, police say, but the plan backfired.
Sgt. George Wheeler said the woman called police at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday to report her 1991 Camaro was stolen. Police had found the vehicle in the 100 block of Michigan, damaged from an accident at 1:39 a.m. Tuesday.
Wheeler said the resident changed her story after questioning, and told the officer she was driving the car. According to an accident report, she was driving north on Michigan when her car was struck by a vehicle pulling out of a private drive in the 500 block of Michigan.
Although the woman who reported the stolen car apparently wasn't at fault for the collision, she left the scene, Wheeler said. She was later cited for leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.
Reports are being forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney's office, for a possible charge of falsely reporting a crime, Wheeler said.
