A few months ago you printed an article about building an above-ground tornado shelter onto the side of your house. Can you reprint the directions or provide me with a phone number that I can call to find out how to do this?

The safe rooms, promoted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, are designed to provide protection from the forces of winds as high as 250 mph, including the impact of debris. FEMA and the Wind Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University have developed designs to build the shelters.

To receive a free copy of the design book, "Taking Shelter From the Storm: Building a Safe Room Inside Your House," call FEMA at 1-888-565-3896. The book includes detailed construction plans for builders and contractors and cost estimates. FEMA also includes information on the safe rooms on its Web site at http://www.fema.org
