Teams of contestants from Lawrence businesses will spell for schools next week at the sixth annual Journal-World Corporate Spelling Bee.
This year's event will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Free State High School commons area.
As of Tuesday, 13 or 14 teams had signed up for the bee, said Neil McEachen, J-W circulation sales manager and coordinator of the event. There's still time for interested businesses and organizations to sign up.
The bee is a benefit for the Newspapers in Education Program.
The J-W already provides a discount to teachers who want to use the newspaper in their classrooms. But with the money raised through the Corporate Spelling Bee, the J-W should be able to meet the teachers' requests at no charge.
"One team entry allows us to give 30 newspapers to a classroom once a week for the entire school year," McEachen said.
"The importance of this program is tremendous."
Teams consist of three members each.
But spellers can be provided for companies or organizations that can can't round up their own, McEachen said.
The registration fee is $300.
Businesses or organizations may enter more than one team.
Upon registration, each team will be sent a "Words of Champions" book, which lists words that will be used during the bee.
Although there is no registration deadline, McEachen said books will go out to teams on Thursday.
"A lot of them will be practicing," he said.
The pronouncer for this year's event again will be Ralph Gage, J-W general manager.
Last year, a team from Communicolor won the event.
