What's Gary Toebben doing at his new job?

Toebben, who had been president of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce for 18 years, is busy meeting people now that he's president of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

He started work Monday, a day after he was to watch the Cincinnati Bengals play the San Diego Chargers at Riverfront Stadium, which is across the Ohio River from the three-county area his new job covers. John Williams, president of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, invited Toebben to the game.

Tuesday he was scheduled to address 1,000 people during the Northern Kentucky chamber's annual meeting. He was still working on his speech late last week.

This Saturday Toebben is set to attend the $1.15 million Kentucky Cup Race of Champions at Turfway Park. The horse race will be a first for a guy born and raised in Nebraska and employed in Lawrence since age 33.

One sure bet: Toebben will be soaking it all in.

"You have to listen for a long time and ask a lot of questions," he said. "That's what I'll be doing."
