On Sept. 22, 1899, the Lawrence World reported, "People at the Santa Fe depot were surprised and shocked to see another invention in operation tending to reduce the amount of labor for idle hands. A steam pump on a flat car spread red paint through a hose which one man operated as a person sprinkles a lawn, and while the crowd watched, covered the outside of a car in a few minutes. The paint was thrown against the building in the form of spray and adhered very evenly."
