athletes of year
Emily Bloss of Wellsville and Nathanael Wheatley of Cherryvale have been named athletes of the year at the Sunflower State Games.
Bloss, a junior at Emporia State, led her women's college team to the gold medal during SSG competition last summer.
Wheatley, now a freshman at Southwestern College in Winfield, was the overall male gold medal winner in the Governor's Cup 5K.
Bloss and Wheatley will be honored, along with SSG sponsors and volunteers, at a reception tonight.
The 2000 Sunflower State Games are scheduled for July 21-23 and July 28-30 with most of the venues in Lawrence.
South blanks
Frontier Trail
Olathe -- South blanked Olathe Frontier Trail, 28-0, in eighth-grade football Tuesday.
The Cougars scored on John Davis' 35-yard run with a Taylor Parker pass to Drew Cummings for the two-point conversion, Clayton Kellerman's 15-yard run with Parker's run for conversion, Cummings' 40-yard TD reception from Parker, and James Nance's two-yard run.
South's defense didn't allow a first-down in the second half.
South (3-0) will play host to Topeka Washburn Rural next Tuesday.
West destroys
Indian Trail, 43-0
Olathe -- West defeated Indian Trail, 43-0, in eighth grade football on Tuesday.
The Warhawks' Will Malcolm had touchdown runs of 12, 10 and five yards. Cole Douglas (15 yards) and Josh Davis (12 yards) also scored on the ground. Malcolm also had a 20-yard TD reception from Kyle Unruh.
Douglas had two two-point conversions and Caleb Harvey had one. Malcolm kicked one extra point.
West (3-0) will travel to Emporia next Tuesday.
Central topples
Topeka Logan
Topeka -- Central's eighth-grade football team defeated Topeka Logan, 36-6, on Tuesday at Logan's field.
Arvelle Trotter scored on runs of 75 and 40 yards and had an 80-yard interception return. Dain Dillingham scored on a 55-yard run. Andrew Cornwell scored on a 3-yard run.
Cornwell had a pair of two-point conversions. Shawn Pringle had a two-point conversion.
Cody Alley recorded a sack.
Central (2-1) will travel to West on Oct. 5.
Seabury soccer falls
Overland Park -- Hyman Brand stopped Seabury Academy, 6-4, in junior high soccer on Tuesday. John Parker scored two goals, while Jake Schneider and Jeremy Smith had goals for Seabury, 1-1.
