Last match: Seve Ballesteros' European squad defeated the U.S., 14 1/2-13 1/2, in Sotogrande, Spain. Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Justin Leonard -- who won three of the four 1997 majors -- all lost singles matches for the U.S. on the final day.

Last year: Hal Sutton won, finishing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Justin Leonard and Jay Haas. Sutton had an 18-under 270.

Last week: Brad Faxon beat Fred Funk in a two-hole playoff to win the B.C. Open in Endicott, N.Y. It was his sixth career victory and first in two years. The playoff was Monday because of Hurricane Floyd.

Notes: Sutton will be playing in the Ryder Cup and will not defend his title. ... David Ogrin won the 1996 tournament for his lone tour title. Last year: Danielle Ammaccapane finished with a 12-under 204 for a one-stroke victory Emilee Klein.

Last week: Maria Hjorth won the Safeco Classic in Kent, Wash., by two strokes over Catriona Matthew. Hjorth had five straight birdies on holes 3-7 en route to a final-round 64.

Notes: LPGA Hall of Famer Babe Didrickson Zaharias was one of only two women on ESPN's list of the 20 greatest athletes of the century. Didrickson Zaharias and Jack Nicklaus are the only golfers in the top 20. ... Karrie Webb leads the money-winning list with $1.4 million. Juli Inkster is second and Se Ri Pak third. ... Inkster, a Tour member since 1984, needs just one point to be inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Annika Sorenstam, on tour since 1993, needs two poins for induction. Last year: South Africa's Hugh Baiocchi won the rain-shortened event for his second consecutive victory. Baiocchi birdied the second hole of a playoff with Bob Charles, Frank Conner, Larry Nelson and Bruce Summerhays. Baiocchi had a 7-under 133.

Last week: Tom Watson won his first career Senior Tour title, the Bank One Championship in Dallas, by five strokes over Summerhays.

Notes: There has never been a repeat winner of the Kroger Senior Classic. ... Baiocchi's best finish this season is sixth, which he's done twice. ... Charles Raulerson set the tournament record of 272 in 1998. ... Baiocchi ranks 18th on the money list this season. ... Next is the Vantage Championship in Clemmons, N.C. ... Notes: Paulson has won two of the last three tournaments to move to the top of the money list. ... Paulson is only the third player to top $200,000 for a season on the Nike Tour. ...
