Marketing and design firms are growing in downtown Lawrence, thanks to a growing workload.

Two Lawrence-based marketing and design firms recently landed major promotional contracts.

Callahan Creek, 805 N.H., signed a deal with Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. in Topeka, which makes Science Diet and Prescription Diet pet foods.

North Co., 1040 N.H., inked a contract with Benedictine College in Atchison.

"For us, it's a big contract because it means working on all their print materials," said Christine North, president of North Co. "It complements our mission for the type of clients we want to secure."

Among North Co.'s other clients: Baker University, Kansas Board of Regents, Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau and First State Bank and Trust. The company also recently signed with HNTB, an international architectural design company based in Kansas City, Mo.

The Benedictine deal also means that North's three-member firm will continue growing. She plans to hire another designer by year's end.

Callahan Creek, meanwhile, will put together domestic "pet channel" annual promotions for Hill's, which already had been the firm's biggest client. The work will mean hiring another five to seven employees, and putting together a team of a dozen staffers to handle all the work, to include trade advertising and newspaper inserts.

Terms of the year-long contract were not disclosed, but Cindy Maude, Callahan Creek's president, called the deal "a major piece" of business.

"It's really good news," Maude said. "It's a strong national brand, so it's good for Callahan Creek."

Callahan Creek, which moved in May to Lawrence from Topeka, provides advertising, marketing and public relations services. Among its other clients are Capitol Federal Savings, the Kansas Department of Commerce & Housing, the American Academy of Family Physicians and St. Francis Hospital and Sprint North Supply.

Callahan Creek has 45 employees in Lawrence and two at its satellite office in Topeka.
