A Lawrence woman faces fines and five days in jail after being found guilty of charges surrounding her pit bull dogs.

A Lawrence woman who was the center of complaints regarding her pit bull terriers has been convicted of 12 municipal charges and sentenced to spend five days in jail and pay hundreds of dollars in fines.

Lawrence Municipal Court Judge Randy McGrath found Jessica Brockman guilty of nine counts of having a dog at large; two counts of damage to property by an animal, stemming from incidents in which her dogs attacked two other dogs; and a count of not having proof of an animal immunization.

She also was ordered to pay $620 in fines, $250 in restitution and $129 in court fees.

In addition, she was placed on probation for two years. One of the conditions of her probation is that she is not be allowed to have a dog at her residence, said Cathleen Abell, assistant city prosecutor.

Brockman has through Monday to appeal the sentence, which was handed down last week following a trial.

"I was pleased with the sentence that was handed down and was happy that we accomplished what we set out to do," Abell said. "The main thing is getting those dogs off the street and sending the message to the owner that this type of behavior will not be tolerated."

Brockman could not be reached Monday.

Her attorney, Chuck Briscoe with Douglas County Legal Aid, said he could not comment.

Brockman was arrested May 26, and her dogs, Reddy and Cowboy, were seized and taken to the Lawrence Humane Society, where they remain, Abell said.

Pending an appeal, the dogs will either be euthanized or adopted by another person, at the discretion of the Humane Society Shelter Director Midge Grinstead, Abell said.

The dogs were seized after they attacked and wounded a dog owned by Anne Haehl on Feb. 19 on Haehl's property.

Another dog, a Yorkshire terrier owned by Amber Wiley, was fatally attacked on May 21 by Brockman's dogs on a sidewalk within a block of Brockman's former residence, 611 Ill.
