Free State golfers

fifth in tournament

Topeka -- Free State High's girls golf team overcame the loss of its No. 1 golfer to finish fifth at the Washburn Rural Invitational on Monday at Lake Shawnee.

FSHS junior Lauren Phlegar withdrew from the tournament on the third hole because of illness. The Firebirds endured cold, rainy conditions to fire a 219.

"It was good to play in the cold because this is where regionals probably are going to be now," FSHS coach Steve Grant said. "The weather could be nasty there so it was good for them to see what it is like to play on a miserable day."

Host Washburn Rural won the tournament with a 197, followed by Topeka West (215), Topeka High (216), Shawnee Heights (217), Topeka Hayden (235) and Topeka Seaman (254).

The Firebirds were led by senior Tess Lane, who tied for 12th after carding a 50. Other Free State scores were junior Libby Towner, 54; freshman Ashley Johnson, 55; and senior Jenny Frye, 60.
