The game: Romero, who didn't play football last year, had 12 carries for 81 yards and six receptions for 81 yards in Lawrence's 48-36 loss to Shawnee Mission West on Friday night. He also scored on a two-point conversion.
Comment: "He didn't play as a junior and came to me this summer asking if there was an opportunity to play," Wedd said. "From the slot position, he's doing a better job of running the ball and catching the ball."
Honorable mention: Senior receiver Blake Allen (three catches for 32 yards, including a seven-yard TD reception on fourth down, four PATs); senior quarterback Bryce McMichael (11-for-22 with a career-high 149 yards passing); senior fullback Justin Lorenzo (81 rushing yards, two touchdowns -- both in the fourth quarter); senior offensive linemen Aaron Haack, Beau Wenger, Nick Gregory, Joel Dankenbring and Tom Murray for helping the Lions generate a season-high 431 yards total offense.
