KU's Topeka center

getting a new name

Kansas University's Capitol Center, a program in Topeka that offers instruction in public administration, will be changing its name to the Public Management Center.

The center dates back to 1974 and has been offering classes on weeknights and weekends for master's degrees in public administration and public manager and executive development programs. KU faculty members teach most of the classes with help from the Division of Continuing Education.

The change of name is the result of the addition of new programs and the offering of training to city and municipal employees.

Joe Harkins, director of the public management center, said it's an outreach effort.

"We've concentrated on Topeka and state government. We're not backing away from great relationships and a history of success. But we believe municipalities have many of the same needs and challenges. As part of a statewide university, it makes sense for us to expand our mission," he said.
