— Free State High, ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A coaches' volleyball poll, went 4-2 and placed third Saturday at the Johnson County Community College tournament.

"We showed a lot of improvement," said FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins, whose Firebirds are now 8-4. "With the change of personnel -- losing 4 seniors and three starters -- there were some young kids who stepped up."

The Firebirds went 3-1 in their pool, including their first-ever victory over Overland Park Aquinas, 15-9, 8-15, 15-11. They beat Blue Valley, 15-12, 15-4, in the quarterfinals before losing to Shawnee Heights, 7-15, 9-15, in the semifinals.

Free State setter Alison Lungstrum and middle hitter Joyia Chadwick were selected to the all-tournament team.

Outside hitter Alexis Bliss remains sidelined with an ankle injury, but should return to the lineup soon, Hopkins said.

Sophomore Amy Vormehr is filling in for Bliss.

"Amy took her spot and was just awesome," Hopkins said.

Next for Free State is a Thursday quadrangular at Leavenworth.
