Do restaurants and bars recycle glass and cans? If not, why not? That's a lot of cans and glass going in the trash.

City officials don't know exactly how many restaurants or bars recycle glass and cans, but they do know where and how they can get the job done.

Mollie Mangerich, the city's operations supervisor for waste reduction and recycling, said Lawrence businesses and households have access to two recycling services that provide collection services -- for a fee -- for glass containers and tin, along with other materials: Eco-Services, 841-1615; and Community Living Opportunities, 865-5520.

If businesses do not want to pay for collection services, Mangerich said, they may haul their glass and tin to the Wal-Mart Community Drop-Off Recycling Center, 3300 Iowa.

The city's Solid Waste Division currently provides cardboard recycling services to more than 500 businesses in town, she said.
