To the editor:

As has been noted in the Lawrence Journal-World, Wells Overlook had -- in recent years -- suffered an accumulation of trash, vandalism, and deterioration of its facilities.

After reading of this situation, Andre Bollaert of the Roger Hill Volunteer Center contacted the county and offered to include the overlook in "Day of Caring," a United Way effort which matches volunteers with community needs. The county gratefully accepted Mr. Bollaert's offer.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, between 60 and 80 volunteers spent two hours at hard labor, trimming trees and bushes, clearing trails, and picking up trash. Of special note were the many workers from Free State High School and Larryville.com. The park looked beautiful after their attention.

The county is now working on a plan to improve ongoing maintenance and security at Wells Overlook. We'll come up with a menu of possibilities for public review and comment. Meanwhile I want to thank Mr. Bollaert, the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, United Way, and the hundreds of volunteers who took part in the countywide "Day of Caring." Thanks for the hard work. Thanks for reminding us what it means to be a community.

Charles Jones,

Douglas County commissioner.
