Coffee pot fire

doused in time

A Douglas County Sheriff's sergeant may have saved a construction trailer from significant damage after extinguishing a fire inside on Monday night.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Nelson was driving on 23rd Street when he was flagged down by a woman waving her arms and saying there a was fire in a nearby construction trailer.

Nelson looked inside the DiCarlo Construction Co. trailer and could see flames coming from a coffee maker that had been left on. The trailer is located near dorms under construction at Haskell Indian Nations University.

He broke glass on one of the trailer's windows and used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.

There was "very little" damage to the trailer, although Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews had to force open the door of the trailer to make sure the fire was out, said Fire & Medical Battalion Chief Dan Morrow.
