ALLEN STILL BUMMIN OVER CU LOSS

Two days after getting humiliated by Colorado, Kansas University football coach Terry Allen waxed gastronomic.

"We're still trying to digest the fact that we got our lunch handed to us well by Colorado," Allen said Monday on the Big 12 coaches' teleconference.

Allen has found KU's 51-17 loss tough to stomach, and not just because he was grilled on his Hawk Talk radio show and has been flamed on the Internet.

"We're trying to regroup the forces, get our composure back and defend the home turf," Allen said, referring to Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff with San Diego State at Memorial Stadium. "I think anomaly is a pretty good word. We play two consecutive nonconference games. The way things have transpired, we're more concerned with ourselves. We have to clean some things up before we go out and face the Big 12.

"Obviously, we're disappointed with our play. With San Diego State " we're trying to uphold the integrity of the Big 12. They're a very good football team, and they played a good football game last week, a 24-21 loss to USC."

Allen seems to have changed his stance a bit toward the quarterback outlook. Though Allen suggested he'd start senior Zac Wegner and relieve with Dylen Smith, he left the door open for Smith to start.

"Nothing's really changed," Allen said. "We'll still continue to play them both. At this juncture, we'll go with our senior leadership, but that's subject to change as we continue to evaluate."

Later, on Hawk Talk, Allen was even less adamant.

"We very well might start Dylen pretty soon here," Allen said. "We sure aren't going to tell San Diego State who we're going to start at quarterback."

Neither Wegner nor Smith played well at Colorado, Allen said. Wegner was 3-for-6 for 17 yards and Smith was 14-of-26 for 129 yards with a TD and an interception.

"Neither one of our quarterbacks, Dylen or Zac, played particular well," Allen said. "Dylen Smith has a lot of ability. We have to do a better job getting him coached up. We think he has a bright future."

Injury update: Allen said tight end Jason Gulley underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to clean cartilage from his left knee on Monday, and Allen is optimistic Gulley will miss just the SDSU game.

Wide receiver Termaine Fulton, who suffered a right high-ankle sprain against Cal State Northridge, still is questionable for this week.

And running back David Winbush, who sprained his left ankle at CU, will return for San Diego State.
