Knoxville, Tenn. -- Kansas' Mary Beth Albrecht was named tournament MVP as the Jayhawks claimed a victory in the Tennessee Classic Saturday. The Jayhawks, who beat Lehigh on Friday, stopped Eastern Michigan and Tennessee by 3-2 scores to take the title.
KU beat Eastern Michigan 15-4, 10-15, 12-15, 15-4 and 16-14 and Tennessee 16-14, 2-15, 15-10, 12-15 and 15-7.
Amy Myatt was also named to the all-tournament team.
Albrecht and Myatt led the Jayhawks with 17 kills apiece in a two-hour, 10-minute match against Eastern Michigan. Danielle Geronymo chipped in 16 kills. Albrecht also posted a career-high with a team-leading 22 digs, while sophomore setter Molly LaMere paced the team with 54 assists.
Against UT, KU posted a new Kansas record for a five-game match with 96 kills, led by Amanda Reves' career-high tying 24, followed by Myatt with 19 and Albrecht and Geronymo with 18 apiece. Molly LaMere led the Jayhawks with 77 assists in the match, also a new Kansas five-game
"It was a war today," KU coach Ray Bechard said. "Against Tennessee, we beat a very quality team in a very big match, and that's what we wanted to get out of the pre-conference schedule. This will help prepare us for us the upcoming Big 12 schedule."
Kansas, 9-2, returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 22, as the Jayhawks open conference play by welcoming Texas to the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. Match time is 7 p.m. Tennessee fell to 5-6 on the season.
