Kansas University freshmen Brian Soria and Lyndsay DeVaney won the men's and women's individual titles as the Jayhawks swept Southern Illinois in the annual 5K open water swim race Saturday at Clinton Lake.
The Jayhawk men won 18-49, while the women prevailed, 24-31, in a race scored like a cross country meet.
Soria finished in 55 minutes, 40 seconds. DeVaney's time was 58:48.
"Soria had a dominant race," KU coach Gary Kempf said. "That was one of the best open water performances I've seen in a while."
The top four KU finishers on the women's side were freshmen. DeVaney, Beth Schryer, Gwen Haley and Heidi Landherr each placed in the top five.
"What a tremendous job they did," Kempf said. "That's a good sign of things to come." Results in scoreboard.
