PRISCILLA TYLER

Ottawa -- Memorial services for Priscilla Tyler, 90, Ottawa, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa.

Mrs. Tyler died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Christian Care Cottage, Ottawa.

She was born Oct. 23, 1908, in Cleveland, the daughter of Ralph S. and Alice (Campbell) Tyler. She graduated from Laurel School, Cleveland, and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Radcliffe College in 1932. She also earned a master's degree from Case Western Reserve University, a doctorate from Case Western University and an honorary LL.D. from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She moved to Ottawa, Kan., in 1987.

Mrs. Tyler worked as a parole officer and caseworker at the Cleveland School for Girls and a language teacher for Cleveland Heights Public Schools. She was assistant professor of English at Flora Stone Mather College, Case Western Reserve University, where she served as assistant dean from 1957 to 1959. She also taught at Harvard University; the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana; and the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

She was a member of the Archaeological Institute of America, National Council of Teachers of English, College Entrance Examination Board, National Council of Teachers of English, Conference on College Composition and Communication, California Association of Teachers of English, Linguistics Society of America, International Reading Assn., Modern Language Assn., National Education Assn., World Foundation of Successful Women, Arctic Institute of North America, and the Aesthetics Society of America.

Local organizations Mrs. Tyler was a member of included: Ottawa Community Arts Council; Friends of the Library, Ottawa; and the Franklin County Historical Assn.

Survivors include a companion, Maree Brooks, Ottawa; and his daughter, Stephanie Brooks, Ottawa.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Laurel School, and they may be sent in care of the Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa 66067.
