IN 1899
On Sept. 18, 1899, the Lawrence World told of an ongoing transfer of wealth when it observed that: "The picnics, the fairs, the log rollings, the fraternal gatherings, the shows and other things too numerous to mention are doing their best to take the surplus cash of the country and put it into fewer hands."
