To the editor:
I'm writing regarding the distasteful altering of the Lazer's Format. It seems odd to me that 105.9 The Lazer has just issued the catalyst that will end the lofty status that it has attained. According to Rolling Stones report from last year it was rated one of the top alternative stations in the U.S.
Now the Lazer has tested the music ear of the Lawrence area and everyone in earshot through the medium that is the radio by changing its format to pop and R&B music. Such "artists" as 98 Degrees, n'sync, Backstreet Boys, Brittany Spears and TLC have been filtering their way into the play list since the beginning of September. I began to search the dial for an alternate station as soon as I heard the sounds of boy bands in the groups numbering five. I'm sure many others have felt the same way.
I never believed "Video killed the radio star" until now. Why have they betrayed us? Why have they chosen to leave their established alternative format to move into a format that most of the non-country stations in its broadcasting area already cover? Only the big wigs at the Lazer know for sure. Many a petition has already generated hundreds, possibly thousands of signatures on KU's campus. However their cries fall on deaf ears.
The organization, begun by the Booths that made many stop, take pause and listen to one of the greatest alternative stations has fallen well short of the mark.
Aaron Butell,
Lawrence.
