Ex-Jayhawk to start
for Ottawa U. today
Ottawa -- Former Kansas University quarterback Jay Alexander will be Ottawa University's starting signal-caller when the Braves open their football season today against Bethany College in Lindsborg.
Alexander, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior from Independence, started the last two games of the 1998 season for the Jayhawks.
Alexander also came off the bench against Colorado and completed 11 of 18 passes for 115 yards in the Jayhawks' 38-17 win over the Buffs.
Alexander transferred to OU in August.
Central 8th falls
Topeka Northern Hills downed Central, 23-14, in city eighth-grade football on Thursday at Central. Dain Dillingham scored on runs of 30 and 99 yards, and Andrew Cornwell added a two-point conversion for Central (1-1). Arvelle Trotter recorded an interception, and J.R. Battiest, Chad Smith and Dylan Writt recovered fumbles for the Mustangs. Central will travel to Topeka Logan on Tuesday.
BU rolls, 2-0
Baker's soccer team defeated Bellevue College of Nebraska, 2-0, on Friday at BU's field. Josh Goodpasture and Bryan Elkan scored. Peter Lenz and Jared Miller had assists. The Wildcats, 3-1, will meet Lindenwood on Sunday in St. Charles, Mo.
Seabury falls, 3-1
Topeka Heritage Christian defeated Seabury Academy's freshman soccer team, 3-1, on Friday at Youth Sports Inc. John Parker scored for Seabury. Seabury, 0-1, will meet Barstow (Mo.) at 4:30 p.m. Monday at YSI.
Veritas wins two
Topeka -- Veritas Christian School defeated Topeka Cornerstone Christian School 15-5, 15-1 and Topeka Cair Paravel, 15-3, 7-15, 15-10, on Thursday. Top servers were Ellen Beard and Amanda Mayhew. Veritas, 4-0, will meet Berean Christian School at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Berean.
