Is it legal and/or ethical for the Lawrence public schools to ask students to bring teachers supplies like dry erase markers and tissue for extra credit? If it is legal and/or ethical, isn't it discriminatory to low-income students?
Julie Boyle with the school district stated that the schools provide supply lists to parents so that students will have the necessary items relevant to basic academic tasks. Students are asked to bring tissue for obvious health reasons. Supplies are provided for families of limited means and confidentiality is maintained. The district appreciates all of the community organizations and business who generously provide school supplies for families in need. The district does not condone the activity described as "bringing supplies for extra credit."
