Jewish students
to build sukkah
KU Hillel, the organization for Jewish students at Kansas University, will hold a sukkah-building party at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hillel, 940 Mass.
The sukkah -- an outdoor, temporary booth made of wood and hung with vegetables and fruit -- is customarily built in connection with the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot.
The dates of Sukkot this year are Sept. 24 to Oct. 1.
Jewish students from KU are invited to attend the party, where participants will construct a sukkah out of lumber and a pre-made sukkah kit.
There will be refreshments and music.
For Jews, Sukkot commemorates the yearly harvest. The sukkah is a temporary structure intended to remind Jews of the time spent wandering the desert after Hebrew slaves were freed from Egypt.
A contemporary theme of the holiday is to remind Jews to appreciate the gift of homes and food.
