DEIRDRE AND STEPHEN MARS, Olathe, announce the birth of twin sons on Aug. 30, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Garrett Paul and Skyler Kenneth are the grandsons of Peggy and Paul Kenneth Showalter, Lawrence, and Alice Mars and the late Kenneth Paul Mars of Grandview, Mo. They will be welcomed home by a nearly 3-year-old sister, Camille Alexandra.

BRANDIE WILSON, Baldwin, has been awarded a $1,000 President's Student Service Scholarship by the Corporation for National Service and Rotary Club in recognition of outstanding service to the community. Wilson graduated from Baldwin High School and is a freshman a Harding University. She is the daughter of Bill and Cheryl Wilson, Baldwin.

BRIAN AND ASHLEY ROCKERS, Kansas City, Mo., announce the birth of a daughter, Addison Ann Rockers, on Aug. 25, 1999, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Grandparents are Jerry and Connie Rockers, Lawrence, and Judge and Mrs. David Mikesic, Kansas City, Kansas. Great-grandmothers are Bernice Rockers, Ottawa, and Irene Mikesic, Kansas City, Kan.

TIM STEGER, a Pittsburg State University senior from Lawrence, is one of two students in the nation being awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Thermoforming Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Thermoforming Division. This scholarship is awarded to students on the basis of their interest in thermoforming, grade-point average, letters of recommendation and a student essay. Steger will receive the scholarship in October in Chicago at the ninth annual SPE Thermoforming Conference. Steger is the son of Jim and Laurie Steger, Lawrence. He is majoring in plastics engineering technology with a design emphasis.

THE TORNEDEN FAMILY REUNION is set for Sept. 26 at Building No. 2 of the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The reunion will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Please bring a covered dish, table service and memorabilia. Drinks will be provided. This year's hosts are Floyd and Jeanne Torneden and family. Updated copies of the Torneden Family Tree will be distributed at the reunion.

TYLER PEARCE, Lawrence, recently completed an expedition to Gannett Peak in Wyoming's Wind River Range with the National Outdoor Leadership School. Pearce traveled through the rugged, glacier-carved Wind River Range before reaching Gannet Peak where he spent eight days backpacking. He learned the essentials of climbing, including snow and ice work, ice ax techniques, self-arrests and crampon use.

THESE LAWRENCE AREA students graduated in May from Friends University, Wichita: Ruth Brown, Jeffrey Clauser, Anthony Hubbard, Tarrel Lashley and Kristy Sanford, all bachelor's degrees in human resources management; David Erosenko, a bachelor's in computer information systems; Janell Danitschek, a master's in management information systems; and Darrel Flyingman, a master's in business administration.

THESE AREA STUDENTS have pledged sororities at Emporia State University, Emporia: Ashley Ross, Lawrence, Alpha Sigma Alpha; Sheena Quinn, Baldwin, Chi Omega; and Deon Darting, Baldwin, Sigma Sigma Sigma.

MARTHA J. CLIFFORD, Lawrence, enrolled as a first-year student at Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. Clifford, a graduate of Lawrence High School, is the daughter of Norman G. and Faith M. Clifford, Lawrence.
