Andrea Irick apparently can fly solo.
After qualifying for state three consecutive years in doubles, Irick has proven to be an effective singles player.
Irick, who teamed with Natalie Moreau to finish sixth at state last fall, improved her match record to 12-1 after going 6-0 to win Wednesday's Baldwin Invitational. She upended DeSoto's Lucy Ramsey, 8-3, in the final.
"She has done just fine at singles," BHS coach Ginny Honomichl said. "It's good for the team. We score more team points this way. It's good for her when she's looking to play college tennis. She has enough skills. Her groundstroking is good. Her serve is efficient. She knows what to do when she gets to the net. She doesn't panic."
