In Oklahoma, liquor became legal. Some 500 stores opened their doors to sell for the first time since statehood in 1907. Liquor sales had been legalized in Kansas in 1948.

Old Quincy High, the forerunner of Lawrence High, was featured in a Journal-World article.The Hawklet, an unofficial little brother to the Hawk's Nest at the Kansas University student union, opened in the basement of Summerfield Hall, the new business school building. It was fully automated and was designed to service students and faculty on "the other side of The Hill."
