Kansas University Provost David Shulenburger said Thursday that he never proposed that chalking sidewalks be regulated at KU.
"I wrote a letter to the UDK (University Daily Kansan student newspaper) and sent a copy of the letter to the ACLU, and I was surprised that they went ahead with their event," he said.
The ACLU gave out free chalk to students on Wednesday as part of a free speech event to protest any possible regulations on marking KU sidewalks with chalk.
The group encouraged students to write on the sidewalk in front of Wescoe Hall, which they did, including messages criticizing the ACLU itself.
Shulenburger said an initial story in the student newspaper contained incorrect information.
"I had never requested that there be any kind of regulation on chalking," he said.
He said he sent a copy to his letter to the ACLU before the organization held its event.
