St. Margaret's Episcopal

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt will lead services at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 964 U.S. Highway 40. Adult Christian education will be at 9:30 a.m. and children's activities are provided during the 10:30 a.m. service. Pastoral caller training will take place following the 10:30 a.m. service. The open-plate offering at all three services will benefit St. Margaret's seminarian, Sam Mason.

The Membership Team will meet at 7 p.m. Monday.

St. Margaret's will serve Tuesday at Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. Volunteers are needed to provide food, set up, serve and clean. Sign-up sheets for volunteers are at the back of the church. Alpha takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, beginning with supper.

The Parish Life Team meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Church Growth Team meets at 7 p.m.

The children's choir practices at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The adult choir practices at 7 p.m.

St. Margaret's will host a West Side Folk concert featuring Connie Dover and Roger Landes at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24.

There will be an acolyte workshop at 10 a.m. Sept. 25. This is also the deadline to register for the parish's progressive dinner, to be held Oct. 9.

Unity Church

The Rev. Sherry Schultz will lead services at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday at Unity Church of Lawrence, 416 Lincoln. The Sunday topic will be "Love AND Limit." Phil Jones, didgeridoo teacher, will be at both services and will hold an afternoon workshop "The Yoga of Breath & Sound: Focusing the Mind with the Didgeridoo." The Children's Sunday Experience and the Uniteens/Y.O.U. meet at 11 a.m.

Cheryl Miller will lead "Holistic Health: A Journey into Self-Discovery" at 7 p.m. Monday. The first few classes in this series are an overview of traditional and alternative approaches to health.

Course in Miracles meets at 7 p.m. Mondays.

The "Noon Prayer" group meets Wednesdays at the church.

At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Schultz will lead church members in an examination of the meaning of mysticism and mystical experiences found in the Scriptures.

First Southern Baptist

"Seeking the Right Help" will be the message Sunday at First Southern Baptist Church, 4300 West Sixth. The Rev. Tom Stallworth will use Zephaniah 2:3 as the text for this sermon about living as a believer in a secular world. Bible study meets at 9:15 a.m. Sunday and worship is at 10:30 a.m. A celebration worship begins at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Baldwin First

United Methodist

The annual Holiday Bazaar, sponsored by United Methodist Women of Baldwin First United Methodist Church, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Fellowship Hall of the church, 704 Eighth, Baldwin. Coffee and rolls will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and free-will donations will be accepted. A soup luncheon will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Episcopal/Lutheran

Campus Center

The regular schedule this semester for Episcopal/Lutheran Campus Center, 1116 La., is as follows:

  • Eucharist will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Canterbury House, 1116 La., followed by supper. Bible study is at 6:45 p.m.
  • Eucharist will be at noon Tuesday at Danforth Chapel, Kansas University, followed by lunch.
  • Morning prayer will be at 8 a.m. Thursday at Canterbury House, followed by breakfast.
  • Study group will meet at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Kansas Union.

The previously announced TGIF 2/4 will not take place this week.

Perry United Methodist

The annual Bazaar, Dinner and Auction of the Perry United Methodist Women will be held Sept. 25 at the Perry United Methodist Church, 220 Oak, Perry. The Bazaar, which includes craft items, baked goods, a silent auction and a quilt raffle will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Elswick Hall. Raffle tickets are being sold by the Eve Sub-Group and may be purchased until 7 p.m.

Telephone bids for the silent auction by the Mary Sub-Group will be accepted by Beth Hupe, (785) 597-5206, or Sandy Brown, (785) 597-5230, before the event. Bidding for the silent auction will close at 7 p.m. at which time the raffle drawing and announcement of silent auction winners will take place.

The Mary Sub-Group will also be taking orders for large trays of Christmas goodies to be delivered the week of Christmas.

Children's activities and a cakewalk will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the east churchyard.

The high school Sunday school class will hold a holiday boutique in the church parlor. Proceeds will fund a Christmas adoption.

Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Take-out dinners will be available.

Items left over from the bazaar and dinner will be auctioned after 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Lawrence Jewish

Community Center

The Lawrence Jewish Community Center has services at 7:45 p.m. Fridays. Rabbi Judith Beiner will join the community for services Friday and for an adult education class from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The remainder of this year's High Holy Days schedule will be as follows:

Church of God

The Messengers, a gospel group from Topeka, will be in concert at the 10:45 a.m. worship hour Sunday at Indian Hills Church of God, Louisiana Street and West 29th Terrace. A free-will offering will be taken. Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m.

United Methodist

The Rev. Gel Samson will lead the 8:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at Lecompton United Methodist Church, 353 Elmore. Fellowship will follow the 8:45 a.m. service. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. The administrative board will meet at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Heartland Community

Paul Gray will give a message, "Misplaced Trust," at the 11 a.m. service Sunday at Heartland Community Church, 1031 N.H. The accompanying drama is "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," and Rick Shear will sing "Strength in You." A nursery and a children's class will be available.

In the 9:30 a.m. service, Mark Chrislip will teach the final segment on biblical principles of money management. Sunday school classes for all youths are at 9:30 a.m.

Centenary

United Methodist

The morning worship service Sunday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth, will be led by the Rev. Heather Hensarling, campus minister for the United Methodist Campus Ministry at Kansas University. Hensarling's sermon will be "Finding My Way Home from Here."

Church members are invited to gather Friday evening for movie viewing and discussion, sponsored by the Vision Committee.

Orthodox Christian

Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Christian Church, 2516 Huntoon, Topeka, will celebrate Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. on the Sunday after the Elevation of the Cross, preceded by Orthros at 8:50 a.m. The Rev. First Christian

The Rev. Ron Goodman will preach "What Jesus Really Taught About Approval Seeking," in both the 8:15 a.m. traditional and 11 a.m. contemporary worship services Sunday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. This sermon will be a continuation of accepting Jesus as our teacher and seeking to obey his teachings.

Divorce Care, for people who have experienced divorce, will meet Oct. 7 and continue for 15 weeks. Contact the church for information.

Following a new fall schedule, the senior high youth group meets at 6:30 p.m. Sundays and the junior high youth group meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Pioneer Clubs, a program for children age 4 through the sixth grade, will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The club begins Sept. 29.

Salvation Army

Lt. Carolyn Schuetz will preach at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday at The Salvation Army Church, 946 N.H. The sermon is "Feed Them Yourself." Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. Midweek activities, which are now on Wednesday nights, include a ladies group at 5 p.m. and Bible study at 6:30 p.m.

Plymouth

Congregational

The Rev. Peter Luckey will preach at the 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. services Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. The sermon is "Justice and Mercy," based on Matthew 20:1-16.

New-member orientation begins at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, for anyone wanting to join Plymouth or wanting to know more about the church. A second session will be Sept. 26, and new members will join at the 10 a.m. service on Oct. 10.

Mustard Seed

Christian Fellowship

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa, begins worship at 10 a.m. Sunday. Bible classes for all ages are from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The celebration service starts at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Both services follow a similar format. The junior and senior high youth group, "The Connection," meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

Evangelist Charles Doss will be ministering in the Sunday morning and evening services Sept. 26.

Another Way, a children's outreach for all first- through seventh-graders, meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays at the church.

First United Methodist

The Rev. Sharon Howell's sermon Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., is "Abraham, Elizabeth, et. al.," based on Micah 6:6-8.

First United Methodist will honor its elders Sunday, through special litany and participation of older members in the morning worship services. Artwork by 15 of the congregation's older members will be exhibited in Fellowship Hall. People may greet the artists and view their work from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"Cross Rhythms," the college-aged singing group, rehearses at 6:30 p.m. Sundays in the choir room. New members are welcome.

New Hope Baptist

New Hope Baptist Church will meet at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Dr. The teaching through Colossians will continue with the text of Colossians 1:25-27. Focus will be on the mystery of Christ living in his people. Call 842-0752 for information.

St. John the Evangelist

The St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church parish picnic will begin with Mass at 4 p.m. Sunday at Broken Arrow Park.

Heights Christian

The focus of the 10:15 a.m. service Sunday at Lawrence Heights Christian Church, 2321 Peterson Road, will be "God, Our Creator." There will be a guest speaker at both the 9 a.m. Bible study and the 10:15 a.m. worship service. Kids' Time for first- through sixth-graders begins at 10:15 a.m. Preschool and kindergarten Extended Session begins at 10:15 a.m. Infant care is available during morning activities.

Adult choir will rehearse at 5 p.m. Sunday. Junior high and high school youth groups meet at 6:30 p.m. at the church. Adult Bible study meets at 6:30.

Latter-day Saints

The topic for worship services Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is "Personal Revelation and Revelation for the Church." Lawrence First Ward meets at 9 a.m., and Lawrence Second Ward meets at 1 p.m., both at 3615 W. 10th. The Haskell University Branch meets at noon at 120 Indian Ave.

Veritas Christian School

The students of Veritas Christian School, 256 N. Mich., welcomed back two faculty members from their world travels. The school administrator, Peter Gitau, returned from a summer mission to Kenya. During his trip, Gitau led a ministry team that sponsored a week-long interdenominational convention for church leaders in the Nairobi area. While there he presented two pastors with bicycles bought with money raised by Veritas students. Later in the summer his ministry team conducted a week-long crusade in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.

Also welcomed back to Veritas was James Schaeffer, instructor of art, from a year-long trip to Florence, Italy, where he studied the painting techniques of the Renaissance.

Trinity Episcopal

Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will celebrate Rite I Eucharist at 7:45 a.m. and Rite II Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with the Rev. Kelly Demo preaching at both services. A party for people with September birthdays will follow the late service. The nursery will be open at 9 a.m. ECA will meet at 10:30 a.m. All other Christian education classes will meet at 9:15 a.m. J2A and Rite 13 will NOT meet in the morning, instead they will meet from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Morning prayer will be offered in the chapel at 9:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Trinity church members will serve Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (LINK) from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. Contemplative prayer will be offered in the chapel and rehearsal of Trinity Choristers will be held, both at 7 p.m. Thursday. Also Thursday, Cursillo will meet at 7:30 p.m. Canterbury Choir will rehearse at 8 p.m.

Evangelical Free

The Rev. Beau Abernathy's message at the 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Christ Community Evangelical Free Church, 1449 Kasold, will be "The Day Jesus Got Angry."

Ninth Street

Missionary Baptist

Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church, 847 Ohio, has services at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Arthur Jackson Jr. of New Shiloh Baptist Church, Miami, will be guest speaker at the later service. Senior citizens also will be honored at that service with essays on "What a Grandparent Means to Me," written by youths in the congregation. Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m.

Mid-week prayer and study is from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Prayer service is at 7 p.m. Adult and youth Bible study is from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

West Side Presbyterian

The Rev. Dick Pierson will deliver the sermon "Who is in Charge?" at 11 a.m. Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold. Scriptures are Exodus 16:2-15 and Matthew 20:1-16. After worship there will be a carry-in potluck dinner followed by business of the congregation. Deacons will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Unitarian Fellowship

A program, "Life Styles of the Catastrophe Prone," will be presented by John Brewer at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday meeting of Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road. There will be time for discussion following the presentation. Religious education will be available for children and young adults during that time. Infant and preschool care will also be available. The regular meeting will be preceded at 9:30 a.m. by the UU Forum, which will discuss the history of the Bible.

A new informal singing group, under the direction of Cynthia Cole, is being offered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sept. 26. The UU Forum and the singing group will alternate Sundays for meeting times.

Lawrence

Free Methodist

Sunday school at Lawrence Free Methodist Church, 3001 Lawrence Ave., begins at 9:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m. the Rev. David Foster will preach the morning message, "Speech Therapy."

Family Center Fellowship will be at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Family Life Center at the church. Discussion for the evening will focus on "How to determine your church's health."

The Lawrence Free Methodist youths will have a mum sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25. All proceeds will benefit the youth group on its mission trip to Mexico over spring break.

Southside

Church of Christ

Pulpit minister Mark Abshier will share the sermon "When God Parts a Sea" during the 10:30 a.m. worship Sunday at Southside Church of Christ, 25th and Missouri streets. Sunday school classes for all ages are at 9:30 a.m. Youth minister Kip Pittman will offer the lesson "Connecting with your Kids" during the second service at 6 p.m.

First Baptist

The Rev. Marcus W. McFaul will preach on "Building the Church " Through Missions and Evangelism" at the 8:30 a.m. service Sunday, the 17th Sunday after Pentecost, at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold. The church will commission three youths to an American Baptist regional organization, Youth Leader Core, at the 10:45 a.m. service. Following the second service, the junior high Sunday school class and their families will have a potluck party. A Sunday school teacher training luncheon will also be held following the second service.

Christian musician Kyle Matthews of Nashville, Tenn. will present a free concert to the public at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the church.

Redeemer Lutheran

The Rev. J.W. Watson will preach "Dot, Dot, Dot "" from Matthew 18:12-35 at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave. The order of service with the celebration of Holy Communion will be from the Lutheran Hymnal. Peace Mennonite

Sunday worship for Peace Mennonite Church will be at 10:30 a.m. at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread. The topic this week will be "A Celebration of Song and Service." Elvera Voth, chorusmaster for the Kansas City Lyric Opera, will lead the congregation in singing and speak about her work with Arts in Prison Inc., an organization that brings choral music, drawing classes and theater to the men at Lansing State Prison. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m.

Christian Science

The Bible-lesson sermon at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Christian Science Church, 1701 Mass., is "Matter." Sunday school, for people up to the age of 20, meets at the same time.

The Wednesday meeting, with testimonies of healing, is at 5:30 p.m. The church Reading Room is open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. This week's radio edition of the Christian Science Sentinel, "Men Talk About Sexual Morality," will be broadcast at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on KLWN 1320 AM.

Central

United Methodist

At the 10:45 a.m. worship service Sunday, the congregation of Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass., will hear a message based on the prophet Habakkuk 6:8. Sunday school for all ages will meet at 9:30 a.m. Child care will be provided during Sunday school and worship. A potluck luncheon will follow worship. Youth Fellowship will meet at 6 p.m.

Drury Place Bible Study will meet at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. The United Methodist Women will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday for its annual general meeting.

Baha'i Faith

This week Baha'is pray that all mankind will be blessed with undiscriminating fellowship, holy discipline and spiritual insight.

The Saturday Deepening for Baha'is continues presentations and discussions at 7:30 p.m. The Slikers are facilitators.

First Presbyterian

The Rev. Art Donnelly will preach "Present Time Only," based on Matthew 20:1-16, during services Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Pkwy. The worship schedule includes 8:30 a.m. worship, 9:30 a.m. church school, 10:30 a.m. fellowship and 11 a.m. worship.

Members of First Presbyterian are traveling today and Saturday to Norman, Okla., to participate in honoring fellow church member Prentice Gautt at the dedication of the Prentice Gautt Academic Center at the University of Oklahoma.
