On Sept.17, 1899, a recent Massachusetts street carnival had been a big affair. The Lawrence World remarked on one aspect of it when it observed: "Practically every window along the street was decorated and the street looked like a dream. The Lawrence merchants deserve no end of credit for their efforts. It takes both money and time to properly decorate a window, but none was spared this year. The business men felt determined to make a success of this embryo street fair and they did it handsomely."
