A Kansas University student who made fake Louisiana driver's licenses for three of his fraternity brothers was given a year of probation and $400 in fines during his sentencing Thursday.

Daniel Sailler, 19, had pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of unlawful use of a driver's license.

During the sentencing hearing, Sailler told District Judge Michael Malone that he had made a "stupid mistake" and had made changes to avoid making more in the future.

Sailler has joined KU's Youth Drinking Coalition and is serving as risk management executive to discourage underage drinking at his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega.

"We have a pledge class this year. It is easy for me to tell the story to them," Sailler said.

Sailler was arrested after police found fake IDs during a burglary call in January at the fraternity house. Sailler has admitted making the fake IDs for himself and three friends planning a trip to New Orleans.

"They were worried," Sailler said. "They said, 'Hey, what are we going to do when we get down there?'"

Sailler's project was not a large-scale, money-making scheme, which is why Malone suspended his sentence of four six-month jail terms to be served concurrently.

Sailler also is to serve 40 hours of community service. Malone suggested that Sailler could work some of those hours talking to student groups about what happened to him.

"I think sometimes there is a real attitude it's not going to happen to me," Malone said.

It did happen to Sailler.

"You have a criminal conviction now," Malone said.
