Commercial Federal Bank is getting a new home in Lawrence.

The Omaha-based bank, which previously operated out of a small office near Sixth Street and Lawrence Avenue, is building a new branch in the Monterey Business Plaza at the northeast corner of Sixth and Eldridge streets. Its opening is expected in early November.

With more than 3,000 square feet of space, Commercial Federal will have room for a complete line of personal and commercial banking services, plus drive-through lanes and a drive-up ATM.

"If we're going to be in Kansas, we need to be in Lawrence," said Tom Perkins, the bank's senior vice president for acquisitions and expansion. "We're confident we can compete " and we've got the financial power to stay in the marketplace."

Commercial Federal, with $12.7 billion in assets, already has 41 locations in Kansas, part of its 260-bank network that covers Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arizona and Minnesota. The new bank will be its first full-service branch in Lawrence.
